Step Up: Donate Shoes to Bring Confort and Hope

For many of us, shoes are something we hardly think about. However, for families in need, a lack of proper footwear can be the difference between health and hardship, opportunity and limitation. Unfortunately, many families in Mauritius still lack access to this basic need. We have launched this campaign to reach out to those who can contribute to making a difference.

We invite you to donate shoes that are in good condition, regardless of size, as every pair counts toward a future of hope, health, and self-worth. Providing those in need with basic footwear helps support comfort, confidence and dignity.

Participating in the – 25th International Convention on Students' Quality Circle, India

Every year there are several international disability-related conferences. These conferences allow thousands of participants to network with colleagues and peers around the world, forge partnerships across national and professional boundaries, and enrich their knowledge and understanding of the work they do with disabled people in their home countries. But every year, there are also thousands of people from developing countries who are deprived from these opportunities because most conferences do not take their financial limitations into account, knowing the importance of disabled persons in these types of conferences. At Southern Handicapped Association (SHA) we work for the recognition of the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities to encourage independent living. Therefore, we encourage them to share and learn new practices to enable continuous development of Persons with intellectual disability worldwide.

In this respect, our school has been solely invited to attend the International Convention Council at Lucknow to be held from the 3rd of December 2024 to the 7th of December 2024 at the City Montessori School. We have been requested to bring 7 students with disabilities and 3 accompanying staff. We will be including students having physical disabilities as well in our group. We believe that everyone should get a chance and among our delegates, two students will be on wheelchairs, and other students diagnosed with intellectual disabilities.

Preparing and assisting young adults with autism to integrate the labour market in professional fields such as music, handmade crafts, cooking, baking, and pastry workshops is an important and valuable endeavor. By offering specialized training and support, these individuals can develop their skills and talents, gain employment opportunities, and achieve greater independence and fulfillment in their lives.

Providing vocational training in musical skills allows young adults with autism to explore their passion for music and develop their talents to a professional level. This can involve learning to play various instruments. Through structured programs and individualized instruction, these individuals can acquire the necessary skills to pursue careers as musicians, music teachers, or performers. It provides a platform for emotional expression, enhances communication and social skills, which also act as a therapy.

Similarly, engaging young adults with autism in handmade crafts workshops empowers them to express their creativity and develop marketable skills. These workshops can focus on various crafts such as painting, Tie and dye, sewing, bag making, or jewelry making. Those young adults can produce unique and high-quality products for sale, either independently or through partnerships with local businesses. This not only provides them with an income source but also boosts their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

In the culinary field, cooking, baking, and pastry workshops offer young adults with autism the opportunity to acquire essential culinary skills and knowledge. These workshops can cover various aspects, including food preparation, baking techniques, recipe development, and food safety. With appropriate training and support, participants can gain the skills necessary to work in professional kitchens, cafés, bakeries, or even start their own food-related businesses.

In conclusion, creating inclusive workplaces that embrace diversity and provide reasonable accommodations can help ensure a positive and supportive work environment for individuals with autism.

Building the 1st floor of Southern Handicapped Association

SHA was created in the year 1985 and since then we have catered free of costs for people with

disabilities. Currently, we have around 100 learners aged 2 years to 20+. Our mission is to

enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities by providing them with essential services,

resources, and opportunities for personal growth and inclusion in society. We firmly believe

that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves equal access to education, healthcare,

employment, and social inclusion.

Our organization at Surinam (Riambel) caters to 60 students from five to twenty years of

age and our space is limited for more learners.

As per the regulations of the Ministry of Education, schools are required to cater for a

specific chronological age of learners (5-20 years) but when it comes to the disability sector,

the regulation completely ignores the mental age of the learners. They are forced to stay at

home after 20 years and due to lack of space, we are not able to cater fully to all students.

Furthermore, we have obtained several admissions this year and we wish to further extend

our services to a higher number of people.

In this regard, we are planning to upgrade our existing building by construction of the 1st

Floor of our school located at Coastal Road Riambel Surinam. All necessary permits have

been obtained from relevant authorities, and detailed plans as well are attached.
